Feedback requested for 5 nt/6 day GC, Zion Bryce itinerary

Finally booked our flights to Las Vegas in late March for our family of four (two school-aged kids).

The only thing cast in stone is the night at the GC El Tovar on Sat 3/29. I welcome feedback and recommendations for attractions and lodging.

Sun/Mon/Tues:

We have a very late arrival at LAS so I%26#39;ve booked a room at the the Golden Nugget (great heated pool) for three nights (one free).

Wed: Leave LV early and drive to Zion where we have a cabin booked in the park. Time for a hike or drive.

Thurs: Up early for drive to Bryce. Room booked at Ruby%26#39;s Inn so kids can enjoy pool. Horseback ride if avail this early in the season and/or scenic drive/hike. Up early for sunrise over the canyon.

Friday: Drive to Page, arriving noon? Antelope Canyon tour by the Navajo guide. Boat ride on Lake Powell? Stay overnight here.

Sat: Drive to GC. Arr 11:30. Overnight at El Tovar. Time for scenic drive and hike?

Sun:stay at GC or see Sedona or Flagstaff?

Mon: Drive to Las Vegas, stopping at Hoover Dam for last night before early flight home on Tues.

Busy trip. Only thing I see is that you probably won%26#39;t be able to do both Antelope Canyon and boat ride on Lake Powell. I would head for Antelope Canyon right away as the light is best mid-day. Then judge whether youu can do a boat ride.

Sunday: Take a drive to Sedona, but spend more time at GCNP. One afternoon at GCNP is not enough. Be sure to drive the east rim drive to Desert View as some of the best views are there.

Thanks for your thoughts. I%26#39;ve checked a book out from our library about seeing the National Parks with Kids and I%26#39;ll try to further refine my itinerary. I think my kids would get a kick out of the pink jeep tours in Sedona, so I was trying to include time for that. Like some other poster on the forum said, the Grand Canyon for kids is like a big hole without a hose. I know I%26#39;m not going to hike down into it. Did that at 16 and haven%26#39;t gotten any less afraid of heights in the many years since!

I think the ';big hole without a hose'; was a comment about being there in summer. It%26#39;s the world%26#39;s most spectacular big hole. My children were there several times at various ages, and enjoyed it every time. The Pink Jeep Tour is inded much fun, also.

I agree that you do not have enough time in the Grand Canyon. It is the most amazing part of your trip with or without kids. I%26#39;d either spend Sun. at the grand canyon or skip something else if you want to include Sedona.

Mary, you will be entering the GC from the east. Do not just drive by, but stop at all the viewpoints. My favorite will be your first stop at Desert View, a great introduction to the canyon. Don%26#39;t rush it, you have time. Once you are settled in your hotel then you can take the hermits rest shuttle tour. If you want to walk between some of the stops on the way out you can, just make sure you know which places it will pick you up.

I personally would stay two days at GC rather than Sedona, and wouldn%26#39;t bother with Flagstaff with this time frame, but that%26#39;s just me.

I think you would need a whole day in Page in order to get both Antelope Canyon and a boat ride, especially in March, but check. Be sure to visit the Horseshoe bend overlook and if you can%26#39;t get out on the lake then tour the dam.

Hi

It%26#39;s less than 3 hours to drive from Rubys Inn to Page and as the other posters have said, visit Antelope Canyon first. All by all it can take up to two hours for a visit and return Page. Maybe see Glen Canyon Dam and visit. Free tours from the visitor center and Glen Canyon Dam is as impressive as Hoover Dam with better views (imo). Leave bags in the car at the free parkinglot and just bring your cameras. Maybe next day first visit Horseshoebend overlook (a must, very spectacular). It%26#39;s west of us89 just outside Page and it%26#39;s some 15-20 minutes walk to the rim. Be careful, no fence! I also would take some time for a stop in Cameron. The trading post is worth a visit though touristy and as Kbec has said, definitely take your time for east rim and maybe visit Tusayan ruins. So probably you won%26#39;t be at El Tovar by noon. Also I would recommend to stay at the rim next day. See the various places in Grand Canyon village and maybe visit the Imax theater in Tusayan, just a 15 minutes drive from the rim.

Yes, Sedona is fantastic but it will add packing unpacking and extra driving. Grand Canyon NP is beyond believe. Colors change and no view is the same and the longer you stay the more you%26#39;ll see. Also watch for condors. Ask the rangers about them.

Have fun.

School age kids means somewhere between 5 and 19, a huge difference in what interests them. If they are in their teens, they might enjoy a walk down into the canyon without you. Younger kids will need more supervision. It%26#39;s hard to give good recommendations without knowing the approximate ages.
