Walking around the park after dark.

Sorry if this sounds silly but can you answer the following:-

1. Is it safe walking around the park after dark? Will be staying at the Maswik and hope to eat at the Bright Angel or El Tovar. Will I be OK walking between the two? How far is it?

2. What wildlife, if any, might I encounter on that walk?

3. What time do the shuttles run to?

I%26#39;ll be there at the end of September.

Thankyou for you help.

Walking around the park after dark.

1. It is safe. But it will be very dark if there is not a full moon. It is about 1/4 mile.

2. You might encounter deer or elk as far as wildlife

3. The shuttle that would take you from Maswick to El Tovar %26amp; Bright Angel runs until around 10:00PM. The Hermits Rest shuttle only runs until 30 minutes after sunset, I believe. You can download the complete South Rim guide, including shuttle routes and times, at this website:

The end of September will be a great time for your visit.

Walking around the park after dark.

This is sort of related to this subject. Is there anything to do in the park in the evenings? Ranger talks, other activities, etc?

Thankyou Mike.

Good question Deb - I%26#39;ll be interested to see any answers.

Deb,

The only thing we did after dark was to go to the bar at Bright Angel, have a few beers and listen to the singer. Not sure how often they have entertainment, but they do sometimes.

Normally, we were so tired after a day walking around / hiking part way down the canyon, we just went to bed. Usually asleep by 10:00PM.

It is the Grand Canyon that is the big attraction, and you can%26#39;t see it at night. Of course, if there is a full moon, it is awesme watching it rise over the canyon.

Pretty safe, unless a skunk scares you, and you jump off the cliff.

Every evening they have a ranger talk at the GCNHA building, in the outdoor amphi. Fireplace and a different talk every night.

This is the end of the paved rim walk, you can walk all the way back to the Tovar, and is just across from ?Yavapai ?

Always book this on the first quarter moon if I can.

The only time you can be alone on the south rim is at night.

Check the schedule for the Grand Canyon Imax. Part of the year it%26#39;s open till 8:30.

Maybe eat dinner at the Grand Hotel and watch the Indian dancers. It%26#39;s somewhat expensive and we were not impressed with the quality of the food for the price, but it might be something to do.

Take your binoculars to one of the lookouts and star gaze.

But MikePin is right, the best thing to do is go to bed early and get up early to enjoy the Canyon when it is least crowded.

I would bring a flash light.I ws gthere in May and went to see the sunset and by the time I got off the shuttle bus to take me to Mather Point and it was very dark cause everything was closed so it was very dark

Thanks for asking some questions I%26#39;d been wondering about! Where is the ';outdoor amphi'; in relation to Trailer Village - or do the campgrounds have their own ranger programs?

Morganism - Why is the first quarter better? Checking the calendar, I see that%26#39;s when we%26#39;ll be there in May. What advantage is this?

The moon rises earlier during the first quarter. But I think more approaching the full moon would be better. The moon will still rise plenty early, but will shed more light.
