I am going to be traveling around the Grand Canyon North Rim area this August. Where is the best place to stay? I want something reasonable in price but above all comfortable and safe. I hope to have 1-3 traveling companions but am not getting any commitments yet so I may be alone. I will be attending a conference in SLC and want to visit Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon and Zion Parks as well as the GC-N. Rim. I am looking for a home base of sorts during the GC-N.Rim, Bryce and Zion portion of the trip. I have never traveled this area of the U.S. and want to see as much as possible but don%26#39;t want to feel hurried.
Would it be better to stay in Kanab, Jacob Lake or Fredonia? I can tell Jacob Lake and Fredonia are a bit small and don%26#39;t have much to choose from hotel and restaurant wise.
Thanks for your help.
Grand Canyon North Rim etc
can%26#39;t help with lodging, but bring water shoes and disposable water proof camera to Zion and do the Narrows. Not to be missed! Water shoes should have toe protection and thick soles to prevent bruising. I wore Tevas and was fine, my husband had soft soled water shoes and the soles of his feet were very sore
Grand Canyon North Rim etc
Can%26#39;t really help with loding either. Might I suggest doing a search for North Rim accomidations.
You will love Moab area. The Quality Inn is nice and has a good breakfast. Try 2 nights if possible. Do one day arches and then get a jeep trip/float trip combo through Canyon Lands. I just can%26#39;t remember the name of the one we used. Haven%26#39;t been to Bryce and Zion in years.
You can check out my Moab pictures at www.pbase.com/dragonflylady
The only lodging right at the North Rim is available at http://www.grandcanyonlodgenorth.com. We%26#39;ve stayed there once when it was still Xanterra and it%26#39;s the best thing to do if you really want to experience the calm and quiet of the North Rim. All other lodging is far away - involves a lot of driving.
Moab would be the best base for Arches %26amp; Canyonlands.
Kanab probably a good option for Zion %26amp; Bryce, but there%26#39;s other possibilites (including inside or right outside both NPs).
Tet14 will be able to give you much more detailed advice. Tet, where are you :) ?
When you go to the North Rim I would stay in the lodging in the park at the north rim. grandcanyonlodgenorth.com. Rustic, but o.k. It is the only lodging at the North Rim.
I would then drive to Zion and stay there. I stayed at the Zion Lodge in the park. Spectacular views of Zion. The mountains are right outside your door. I went back and forth about where to stay and did a night in Springdale and Zion Lodge. I wish I would have stayed two nights in the lodge. Also, you can drive into the park to the lodge when you stay there. At dusk if you drive slow you can see wildlife. When you stay in Springdale you have to take a bus/trolly.
Bryce is two hours away. I%26#39;d save commuting time by staying in the park at Bryce Canyon. I stayed at Ruby%26#39;s. which was fine. ';Touristy';, but I was mainly there to sleep. It%26#39;s a Best Western. Not sure about your itinerary and number of days traveling, which can make a difference. They are all great places to see!
we always stay outside the north rim at jacobs lake, little pricey but rustic .good resturant on premisesand gasoline next door. its about a 33 mile drive into the the park but if you leave earlier in the morn you will usually see lots of wild life. you can also take a 1/2 day trip by mule down to tunnel arch %26amp;back up very reasonable and should be able to make reservations with out any problems, not like at the s. rim where you are competing with the hoards that are trucked in from vegas. also i agree with the other poster about moab, which is ideal for canyonlands %26amp;arches. also the lodge at bryce is probably your best choice, you can make reservations on line at there website at RUBY;S BEST WESTERN. you can even use that as a base to go to the n.rim ,spend the day ,do the mule ride and back to bryce.easy day trip.also as a foot note the lodge at the n.rim is a little pricey%26amp;reservations are a must if you decide to stat, also you can have an excellent breakfast in the lodge reasonable. hope this helps.

Hi Kajo, welcome aboard this forum
It would help if you tell us how long your trip is. Are you flying back from SLC?
Tet
If you want a central place for North Rim, Bryce and Zions then Kanab would be your best bet.
However I would highly recommend you stay closer to the parks. Distances here are big and if you don%26#39;t want to be hurried then you don%26#39;t want to be spending your time driving back and forth to lodging. If you can, get into the North Rim Lodge. Either stay in the park or Springdale for Zions and in the park or at Ruby%26#39;s for Bryce.
The only thing at Jacob Lake is the lodge. Fredonia is okay, Kanab is prettier IMO.
First I want to thank you all for your information. I have a conference in SLC but I had thought to maybe fly in and out of Las Vegas. Would you think that this is a good idea? I hope to have about 2 to 2.5 weeks. I need to be in SLC for about 4 of those days.
I had thought to stay at the lodge at GC-N-rim. I am waiting for the rest of my group to committ or back out so that I can make definite plans.
I was thinking of doing the GC-N-rim either on the way up to SLC or on the way back and do Arches, Canyonlands and the rest the other way around.
What do you all think? Thanks again for your help.
Kajo
I would book whatever is available at the North Rim. Rooms/cabins go quickly. You can always cancel.
Like the idea.
would fly into SLC, and drive down through Moab, and work your way back on HWY 12 as much as possible. Get in at the lodge or cabins at North Rim,splurge here, cuz the nights are worth it. (great little bar there too.)Bring a plastic cup for the patio.
Jacobs lake is a gas station-great brekkie-not much style, and rooms are on the highway. Kanab is too far away, unless you are leaving, and have to crash.
Best bet is to bring camping gear to really enjoy this area.
I like the run through southeastern utah as much as most of the NPs. Usually camp at large, though there are 2 campgrounds around Escalante that have showers.
Highly suggest the canyons along the Escalante river if you like to hike, and great stuff in Grand Gulch, almost every canyon in the area has indian ruins.
The lodge at Bryce is where it is at, so you can see the sunrise, but the little town of Panguitch just up 89 is darling, and you can save some serious coin by staying there and doing day trips to Zion and Bryce. Also a KOA with cabins in between Bryce and Zion.
If a hiker, get a copy of ';Canyon Hiking gd. to the Colorado Plataue'; by Kelsey. Just double his hike times though ;)
