Hello,
We are a couple from the UK who are extending our trip for an extra week to take in your beautiful country. I am considering changing our whole trip (April 3rd-10th).
We were going to drive/camp to/at death valley, then Yosemite but this now seems to much and have decided to settle in one place for 5 days. At present we have chosen GCNP South. We have decided to use the Mather campsite. We have a good budget but want to ';rough it'; for a few days.
Do you think 5 days (April 4th-8th)is too much?
We would like to do something interesting each day.
Should we stay in different parts of the park? or will the one spot be ok?
We will scan the forum for suggestions but your advice is always very welcome!
5 days at GCNP South - is that too long???Every summer I spend a week at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I have my favorite hikes, favorite places to sit and read a book, favorite ranger programs, favorite places to hang out and play cards, favorite drives etc. The big question is, what do you enjoy doing?
There are walks/hikes, visitor centers, drives, ranger programs, and many more shops and restaurants at the south rim.
But, it is a national park, not a theme park. You will basically need to find your own entertainment.
Or, you could leave the park for nearby day trips. You will not have to pay another entry fee.
To begin, however, you must decide what you enjoy.
Have a Grand time!
5 days at GCNP South - is that too long???April at GC south rim will still be quite nippy at night. Make that downright cold! Expect temps around 0潞C at night, probably pleasant during the day. Mather does not have electricity for a heater in your tent.
I%26#39;d suggest you try to visit Page, AZ to see Antelope Canyon:

If you are not serious hikers, I%26#39;m thinking 5 days may be too long . . .
Temps will be warmer at Page to the north or Sedona to the south. More attractions and interesting things to do at both those destinations too. You might want to consider breaking camp and moving around. Don%26#39;t skip the GCNP but 5 days might be too long.
With freezing nights, even though the showers are warm in the morning, 2 nights of camping at GCNP will be plenty. If you have a good budget, I would suggest you head south. Spend a night at Sedona.
Camping is quite scarce in the metro areas of Phoenix and Tucson, but budget hotels are not. Both Phoenix and Tucson have much to offer in attractions to visit.
By all means, listen to these good people and spend only 2 nights at the GC, and maybe give up the idea of camping, if you have the means to stay in a hotel. I love camping, but that would be roughing it a bit too much. I%26#39;d do Page for a day; GC 2 days and Sedona 2 days, or 3. Have fun!!
ok...so after taliking to the girlfriend we are considering just driving around, sightseeing and staying at motels.
Any suggestions of motels and a route?! LOL
Hi - I could perhaps help - I am having 3 weeks in South West USA later in the year so have been planning for a while, and have picked up a few tips.
Where are you flying in/out of - and is your stay for a week in the GC area?
Where are you flying into? We need to start with that to suggest a route. If you are planning to go to GCNP, boost your budget so that you can stay in or near the park. Right now there are no rooms available for April 4/5. You can%26#39;t be calling from the UK to check cancellations, so I would suggest you look in a travel service for hotels in Tusayan just outside the park entrance.
Then where else would you like to go?
I know you%26#39;re coming from CA . . . Palm Springs? Has that changed?
Hi,
We have decided to stay in hotels on the following dates.
31,1st %26amp; 2nd Palm Springs
3rd %26amp; 4th Las Vegas
5th %26amp; 6th Sedona
7th %26amp; 8th Grand Canyon ( 1/2 hr from the park)
9th Palm springs
10th - The plane home!
We will be busy each day in Palm Springs but Las Vegas onwards we would welcome any suggestions on interesting things to do in Vegas,Sedona %26amp; GC.
We are both keen photographers and are taking our main gear with us so any locations for a shoot would be fab.
Basically we just want to drive round see some sites, take some pics. Maybe catch a a sunrise/sunset or two.
we are not into sitting by a pool and reading etc we like to get out!
I%26#39;m thinking of driving from Vegas to Death Valley one afternoon so we can catch a sunset and see some stars....is Area 51 close by ;卢b
I%26#39;d like to stop off at Hoover Dam as well. If there are any other locations like this you think we might like please let us know.
Again appreciate all your help.
Thanks in advance.
