Tours for someone with bad back

I%26#39;ll be traveling to Sedona in mid-April with my mother, who has chronic back and neck problems. Everything I%26#39;ve read seems to recommend a jeep tour, but it looks like the best jeep tours are not advisable for people with bad backs. I know that there are some jeep tours that are designed to be more gentle, but does anyone know if these are still worthwhile or should we just get a Red Rocks Pass and try to drive around ourselves?

Thanks.

Every visitor to Sedona should be planning to self tour with a Red Rock Pass to park at Nat%26#39;l Forest access points. A jeep tour is an enhancement. The most popular jeep tours will take you off roading where bad backs and bad necks shouldn%26#39;t go. However there are some jeep tour options that are tamer and you can still benefit from the knowledge of the driver/guides who will tell you about the history, geology and colorful lore that is Sedona. Call the jeep companies and explain your situation. They will suggest alternatives.

Another very good option is the Trolley tours. There are two routes that the trolley runs on the main roads in a comfortable vehicle. The driver narrates and explains every thing that you see and stops at several places including the Chapel of the Holy Cross so you can wander, stretch your legs and get a close look. Then you will be oriented and can return on your own again if you choose.

Sedona is one of the friendliest and most accomodating towns in the world. You will find plenty of helpful information, just by asking.

Any chance you can share your thoughts on the proposed itinerary below?

Friday: Fly into Phoenix, stay at Camelback Inn

Saturday: Golf school, stay at Camelback Inn, probably do Camelback spa treatment in the afternoon but may try to see some of Scottsdale

Sunday: Golf school ends at 3pm, drive to Grand Canyon, stay at Yavapai Lodge

Monday: Explore Grand Canyon, stay at A Shooting Star Inn

Tuesday: Drive to and tour Monument Valley, stay at Gouldings

Wednesday: Drive to Sedona and spend the day before heading back to Phoenix for Thursday morning flights

Thanks!

ekohn,

I think you%26#39;re trying to do too much and you will be spending more time on the road than you realize.

If golf school ends at 3PM you won%26#39;t even get to Yavapai Lodge before 8PM. A full day at the GCNP is good, but then to try to add MV and Sedona in just 2 more days, is too much.

First, your drive back to Flagstaff at the end of that day at the GCNP will make star gazing a tiresome bore (assuming that%26#39;s why you%26#39;re going there).

After all that, I%26#39;d choose MV or Sedona, but not both. If you go to MV, then it will take almost all of the next day to get back to PHX. You%26#39;ll be shorting yourself on Sedona, and you%26#39;ll be worn out. By that time you%26#39;ll need realxation. Sedona is a good place to do it. I%26#39;d skip MV and go to Sedona for the day/night/day.

I would add that this will be especially uncomfortable for your mother with her bad back. Monument Valley to PHX is a 6 hour drive. That alone would be a long day, and it would leave you virtually no time to enjoy Sedona.

I%26#39;m in Sedona right now. It%26#39;s our third visit but this time we%26#39;re staying for a week in order to really enjoy the area. I picked up my traveling partner yesterday from Sky Harbor (PHX) as he didn%26#39;t want to drive all the way from the SF Bay Area with me, due to his bad back.

His back is killing him today, just in driving from PHX to Sedona yesterday, and then around town today. We%26#39;re not going on a jeep tour (for obvious reasons) but still trying to get up to Navajo and Hopi Country (and through the Painted Desert) and down to Montezuma Castle and Prescott (and all around Sedona in the next week.

It can be strenuous so I%26#39;d take it easier, if I were you, lest you put your mother through a painful experience. Also, don%26#39;t forget to stop a lot and drink a ton of water. But, have fun! We finally decided we had to spend a whole week here, in order to really enjoy it.
