There are no rattlesnakes in Sedona. It%26#39;s too cold. Scorpions are also very rare. I%26#39;ve lived here for almost 10 years and i%26#39;ve only seen one in all that time.

Don%26#39;t worry.

Hi Redrox - no rattlers at all?? We were there 10 yrs ago and I nearly stepped on a snake (don%26#39;t know kind) at Palatki. We%26#39;ll be back in June and will be hiking a lot. I have to say that the snakes are the thing that worries me the most! Diana

ps...I appreciate all of your advice here (and also some Alaska advice you gave me last yr on the CC board).

My husband hikes off the busier trails most of the time, and with temperatures warming up, he is looking out for rattlesnakes. He saw his first one yesterday in the road. We rarely see them except after they have been run over. During the hot months he takes the busier trails because rattlesnakes seem to avoid people. We just keep an eye out for them for example when we are walking the dogs on the road.

We have a variety of snakes here in Sedona including some rat snakes that have similar markings to rattlers. Unless you get close enough to inspect their tails, you can%26#39;t tell the difference. For the most part, it%26#39;s too cold for rattlers here. They thrive in the warmer regions down in the desert around PHX.

I%26#39;ve lived here 13 years. I%26#39;ve seen rattle snakes on the trail many times but they don%26#39;t come after you unless you are in a remote area. Scorpions I%26#39;ve seen a number of times but unless you are staying in the Airport Mesa area or doing trail work you are not likely to see them. The cacti are more of a concern with a child than anything else. They can fall on them or get curious and ouch.

The trails close to Enchantment: Dead Mans Pass (old jeep road), Boynton Canyon, Doe Mountain, or Cockscomb are all well traveled and you shouldn%26#39;t have any issues.

The Boynton Vista trail is very short but has good ';bang for the buck'; with a nice view. A 4 year old should have no problem with it.
