ideas around phoenix

I%26#39;m coming over to Phoenix in March to visit a mate, but for the second week he will be working and I%26#39;m not entirely sure what to do with my time as I will be by myself.

Obviously there is the Grand Canyon, but I%26#39;ve never been to the States before so don%26#39;t know what else is around. Does anyone have any suggestions?

One thought was going to the Californian coast - is this recommended and does it takes long to get there? I really dont have an interest in Los Angeles but San Diego sounds nice.

Any hints or tips very gratefully received!!

Thank you!

Hi Matt and welcome to the forum

It can be a 6 hours drive from Phx to San Diego e/w.

You easily can spend a week visiting Sedona, Grand Canyon and visiting places like Montezuma Castle and Well, Prescott, Jerome, Flagstaff, Williams, Wupatki NM. Sunset Crater Volcano NM, Walnut Canyon NM and make some daytrips around Phoenix so imo it will take too much time to visit the coast. Never miss GCNP and maybe stay for 2 nights. Make your reservations now (www.grandcanyonlodges.com).

Listen to Tet14. Tell him what you want to see and do. He%26#39;ll give you a plan.

If you and your friend have a week together, you may see and do many of the things Tet mentioned. If so, you may want to look at a quick trip to San Diego. You can get very cheap airfare from Southwest Airlines, or just drive. Along the way you can see Joshua Tree, Palm Springs etc.

Don%26#39;t miss the Grand Canyon and enjoy your visit.

Hi Mattexeter from Exeter! If you really have only one week, why not stay right here in Arizona? When you think of Arizona do you usually visualize heat, sand and rocks? I did too, before my first visit six years ago. I now live in Arizona.

Believe me, Mattexeter, when I tell you that Arizona is border-to-border BEAUTIFUL! The Grand Canyon, Sedona, and even the Superstition Mountains out my way, all await you and are some of the most beautiful destinations in all the world. You%26#39;ve come this far...PLEASE DON%26#39;T MISS ARIZONA! Safe journeys, Rick (Constant-cruiser), Gold Canyon, Arizona

Maybe a quick preview on www.arizonahighways.com

Don%26#39;t know if you like sport, but you may want to satisfy a bit of curiosity about baseball... (if you have any such curiosity.)

March in Phoenix is when almost half of the major league baseball teams spend a month or so in ';spring training.';

Tickets are reasonably priced, and easily available (with the exception of the Chicago Cubs, which are the top draw.)

Even if you don%26#39;t like baseball os sport in general, an afternoon in 75 degree weather with some food and a libation in hand is not a bad way to spend some time.

Just an opinion... If you do want to chaeck this out, some of the best venues are:

Diablo Stadium, Tempe

Scottsdale Stadium, Scottsdale

Peoria Sports Complex, Peoria

the response has been great - sorry taken me few days to reply, but thanks to all.

definitely keen to see Arizona and will get my mate to take me to as many places as possible during the week he has off... although he doesnt know that yet... :-)

Tet14 - i might come back to you for suggestions, as you sound like the guy in the know! thanks for the offer.

the only reason i was thinking san diego was because i was keen to get to the coast as i%26#39;m a bit of a beach bum... and thought it might be half-decent weather in March? am i wide of the posts on that one?

re sports - tried baseball when in Toronto few years back... but it didnt do much for me... i%26#39;ll stick to cricket! ;-) but would be keen on checking out an american football match or basketball maybe. are these options at all? out of interest, do Phoenix have a football/soccer team to watch?

again, thanks for tips on what arizona has to offer, and some of the photos on the website provided were amazing!

cant wait to visit!

matt :-)

You%26#39;ll be too late for American football, but you might be able to catch a Phoenix Suns basketball game if they are in town while you are here. In my experience, the best way to buy tickets is at www.stubhub.com. In order to get tickets that are under $50US, you will need to sit in the upper deck, but the view is not bad and your nose won%26#39;t bleed...too much. If you won%26#39;t to try indoor ';arena'; football, which is not your typical American football by a long shot, the Arizona Rattlers will be in town for a couple of games in March, too. Seats for this one will be MUCH cheaper.
