My family of 5 (3 teen/pre-teen children) will be staying at the North Rim Pioneer Cabins in mid Aug 2008 for 3 nights, driving in from Vegas in the evening on the 1st evening, then off to Bryce for nights 4-7, then to Zion for nights 8-10. We will most likely hike the North Kaibab Trail to Roaring Springs on 1 of the days in GC. Looking for other ideas during our stay in GC.
Advice for North Rim Itinerary
Wish I could help, I%26#39;m headed to the North Rim for my first visit this summer too! Check out the recommended trails on www.nps.gov/grca.
I%26#39;m sure others will post with more info! And I will be watching for info myself!
Advice for North Rim Itinerary
I, too, am looking for recommendations for the best way to spend a day at the North Rim. Since we will be hiking down to Phantom Ranch the next day, we will want to do something other than the North Kaibab trail.
Based on one of my books, ';Best Easy Day Hikes (Grand Canyon)';, I am thinking that we could head out the Cape Royal road and walk several of the trails that head off from that road; Cape Final (4 miles RT); Cliff Spring (1 to 2 miles RT), and then Cape Royal itself, with an easy short walk to both viewpoints (Angel%26#39;s Window and Cape Royal).
If anyone in the group hasn%26#39;t had enough walking at that point, we can drop them off at the Ken Patrick trailhead for the 3-mile walk along the rim to Point Imperial, where we can pick them up.
We will also walk out to Bright Angel Point right from the lodge.
Hi all,
There is a ton of things to do at NR. You can drive to Point Imperial and check out the view and also do some hiking along the rim trail which I beleive is part of the Ken Patrick Trail. Great views!
If you are really up for a trip, try the Point Sublime trail. You will need a 4x4 vehicle to do this. It%26#39;s approx a 20 mile drive but will take you anywhere from 2 - 2 1/2 hours to do. It%26#39;s well worth the drive though. Just pack a lunch and bring your camera and enjoy the solitude!
I%26#39;m guessing you are aware that the hike to Roaring Springs is approx 4 1/2 miles one way? Please make sure you have plenty of snacks and water for everyone. It can get very hot. Also, it will take you almost twice as long to hike back up as it does to hike down.
There%26#39;s also the Ranger talks at night that we found very informative. Might want to check it out.
Also the dinningroom is by reservation only for dinner. You might want to check into that if you would like to eat there one evening. Breakfast and lunch are open seating.
Enjoy your stay
SJG
