arriving next friday

Arriving next Friday for three nights. Staying at the Loews Ranch. Any suggestions on what to do and see. No kids. Can I wear shorts during the day and should I bring a heavy jacket? Thanks

You%26#39;re staying at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, or at Canyon Ranch?

Check out the Desert Museum, the Botanical Gardens, San Xavier Mission, the Arizona State Museum, the Center for Creative Photography and the Pima Air %26amp; Space Museum. Lots of shopping on Fourth Avenue and at the Lost Barrio (Park Avenue south of Broadway), as well as in the area around the resorts at La Encantada Mall.

You can also take a hike. The Ventana Canyon resort is right on an excellent hiking trail into Ventana Canyon and the Santa Catalina Mountains. If you%26#39;re in good shape, you can take a day hike all the way out to Ventana Canyon%26#39;s namesake, ';The Window.'; It%26#39;s tough though.

Shorts should be okay for the day unless it%26#39;s cloudy (like it is this week, although it%26#39;s supposed to clear up by the weekend). Nights will be chilly though and should require a light jacket or sweater and long pants.

thanks - we%26#39;re staying at the Loews Ventana Canyon Ranch. Someone suggested eating at Cafe Terra Cota and Anthony%26#39;s. Any comments on these places. We love Mexican food and would like to eat at least at one nice place. What is the dress code for Anthony%26#39;s. Thanks

You%26#39;ll get better and more authentic Mexican food at the places in town. Places like Guadalajara Grill, Mi Nidito, Teresa%26#39;s and La Poca Cosa (Downtown).

There are a couple of decent places in the Foothills near the resorts although I don%26#39;t have a lot of personal experience up there. Papagayo is supposed to be decent.

Tucson is generally pretty casual except for some of the places in the Foothills, Anthony%26#39;s being one of them. Formal would be best. Cafe Terra Cotta is more casual though.

Don%26#39;t miss a meal at Vivace%26#39;s at St. Phillip Plaza. Best food in Tucson.

We live 1 mile from Lowes and dine-out often:

Cafe Terra Cota: Nice menu and selection of SW style, make reservations, a bit trendy. Service is spotty. I prefer for lunch rather than dinner.

Anthony%26#39;s: Arguably the best Tucson has to offer, also the most expensive. Complete dinner for two w/o wine +/- $100. (Worth it in my opionion, I was last there last month.) Make reservations, a jacket will get you a better table, but not required.

Papagayo: Really can NOT be compared to other two and I would not recommend. (Ate there 2 weeks ago.) You won%26#39;t be happy.

Vivace%26#39;s is Italian and many think the best in Tucson. Having lived close to South Phila and spent serious time in Rome, I beg to differ. But that%26#39;s just my opinion. Make reservations!

If you want French: the best is Le Rendez-vous. They have a unadvertised 4 course dinner for two $69 complete that is fantastic. It%26#39;s a 2 hr meal

that we do 2X/month. Make reservations. Casual dress is okay or jacket.

Finally: For Mexican that is a bit closer to Lowes than the others mentioned I would try: La Placita Cafe. Good menu, where locals go. A bit underrated because previous owners let it go down hill. Was acquired 3 years ago and is now quite good. Casual attire. Casual is fine.

Enjoy!

Agreed on Papagayo, although there aren%26#39;t many other choices in that area. Also very much agreed on Vivace. You can get better Italian in the city for much cheaper, although I love Saint Phillip%26#39;s Plaza and they have a really good wine selection. But you could just step right outside to 54 Degrees for wine.
