Best place to stay for someone driving from Vegas

Hi. We are 5 people driving from Vegas in a 4x4 for a 1 night stay at the Canyon, en route to LA.

I notice there is quite a big selection of Lodges/Hotels etc to choose from, on different rims/ridges etc...

Which is the easiest to get to from Vegas?

Which is nearest to the new Viewing Walkway?

Can you book helicopter rides over the Hoover Damn once you are there or is it best to book in advance?

Hi

GCNP is a 5 hours drive from Las Vegas and in the opposite direction from Los Angeles. Between GCNP and LA is another 8-9 hours drive. So GCNP is not en route.

You don%26#39;t need a 4x4 to visit GCNP.

Best place to stay is inside the NP. El Tovar, Kachina Lodge, Thunderbird Lodge and Bright Angel Lodge are right at the rim. Maswik and Yavapai lodge are on a short distance. Make your reservation asa possible: www.grandcanyonlodges.com. Just outside the NP in Tusayan also is good accomodation but you%26#39;re not at the rim. Just a short drive from Tusayan though.

For a flight over the canyon best is to make your reservation. Flights are from GC a/p which also is in Tusayan. On this short visit I would recommend to spend your time as long as possible along the rim and see GC Village.

You can make heliflights to Lake Mead and Hoover Dam from Las Vegas.

D%26#39;oh! Looks like I really screwed my geography up! Change of plan.

I%26#39;m thinking driving and stopping for 1 night maybe a bit much.

Instead I%26#39;m thinking of a day trip from Vegas. Can anyone reccomend a good one?

I found one where you fly from Vegas to the Canyon, then take a helicopter flight to the bottom of the Canyon, then a boat ride, then a bus ride round the rim. $289. That sound good?

That would be to Grand Canyon West which is not in GCNP, but is where the Skywalk is located. There are few viewpoints. The area is far less scenic than GCNP South Rim. The elevation is 3000 feet lower. In summer it is very hot. Read about the Skywalk in Inside pages (click on GCNP Overview at left). Also check the sticky at the top of this forum.

If you%26#39;re coming from the UK, please see the best of the canyon at GCNP South Rim. It%26#39;s worth the time and effort to get there versus the alternative heli trip to GCW. You can also fly from LV to GCNP South Rim in a fixed wing aircraft, for less money, have a short ground tour, and see the real canyon.
