Ok GC Experts-I have now been able to book our airfare for our August vacation (thanks to Southwest opening up more of their schedule!)All accomodations were booked ages ago.
My question-we are now flying into Las Vegas and picking up a van on August 7 rather than the 8th which we originally thought-we have booked 2 nights in LV before going on to Zion and checking in August 10 (for 2 nights). Should I add a 3rd night in LV (for the extra day we have picked up) or is it better to stay somewhere closer to Zion or is there another gem I am missing to visit? (from Zion we go to Bryce, Page, Sedona, GC and back to LV over 2 weeks).
Thx
Keri
An Extra Day-What to Do?Hi fourdarlings1997,
Southwest has also made the day for a member in the Yellowstone forum.
Another night in Springdale would be nice.
Or, you are close to Momument Valley from Page. The closest lodging there is Gouldings Lodge.
Will you be able to fit this in and change all of the other lodging after by one day? If so, go for it. It may be a problem at GC though.
You already have a great trip planned. You will have a wonderful time if you can not make any changes.
Enjoy your trip!
An Extra Day-What to Do?Thanks. I don%26#39;t want to rearrange all of our other hotels etc. so it is just the one extra day at the front. We have 4 kids-so we are not staying in Vegas to gamble but just as a starting point-I have heard VAlley of Fire is beautiful and an easy day trip. We don%26#39;t fly in until late afternoon Thursday so it would be 2 full days if we stay Fri/Sat and leave Sunday am for Zion.
Keri
You could make a fantastic daytrip around Las Vegas and stay an extra night at the LV hotel.
Drive I15 north to exit 75 and head for Valley of Fire SP. After the visit drive to Lake Mead and drive more or less along its borders to Hoover Dam. Then back to Las Vegas and visit Red Rock SP west of Las Vegas. Exit 33 and nv 159 to Red Rock.
Maybe this is too much on a hot day. Maybe visit Valley of Fire on your way to Zion. Or visit one or more of the LV museum. We liked the Liberace museum.

Personally, I would do what I could to add in Monument Valley to the trip. For me, it was one of the real highlights of visiting the southwest area a couple of years back.
If not, then another day in LV would be fine as there is plenty to do and if you decide you%26#39;ve had enough of the bright lights then, as mentioned above, you can easily head to one of the nearer places worth visiting (Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam).
I would stsy an extra day in sedoana and do the pink jeep broken arrow tour
Thanks for your advice. We are doing Pink Jeep in Sedona-already booked. We have 4 days there with loose plans-hopefully Slippery Rock Park and a trip out to Painted Desert and Petrified Forest.
I am going to look at activities around Lake Mead to fill our first 2 days-Hoover Dam being one.
Keri
I%26#39;d vote for Monument Valley too. A must see IMO. If you go to Valley of Fire, try to do it in the morning. It is interesting to see, but...in late June it was sweltering hot, hot, hot in the afternoon.
FYI For your trip:
Your visit to Arizona is during August 12th and 13th, the Perseid meteor shower peaks then. What a show!
To read more about the Perseid metor shower, visit this website:
http://stardate.org/nightsky/meteors/
This can be seen everywhere, but Arizona skys are so clear. I was in Sedona last August and was able to see the metor shower. Hope you get the chance.
If your in Sedona on August 16, 2008, I%26#39;m sure you and your children would really enjoy this hike. My family did a ';Moonlight Walk'; at Red Rock State Park. We were there during a full moon and they have a guide to take you on the trails. It was fun and we saw several animals at night. You just need a flashlight and water.
Here is the website:
thttp://www.pr.state.az.us/Parks/parkhtml/redrock.html
Copied from the website:
';Moonlight Hikes - An unforgettable experience, this hike includes a naturalist-led interpretive program on the park%26#39;s beautiful trails. Enjoy the sunset and moonrise from an overlook and return by the light of the moon. Hike leaves promptly from the Visitor Center. Please wear suitable clothing (no sandals), and bring water, a flashlight and insect spray. 5:30pm.';
Enjoy!

You could do the drive along Lake Mead and visit Hoover Dam in one day.
In Overton at the nw side of LM is Lost City Museum worth a visit. You can drive to the lake from Northshore road to Overton Beach, Stewards Piont and Echo Bay. There%26#39;s a hotel and restaurant in Echo Bay. Maybe make stops between Echo Bay and Callville Bay. It%26#39;s a very scenic stretch. Drive Lake Shore scenic drive (also places at the lake) to Alan Bible visitor center and it%26#39;s just a couple of miles from there to Hoover Dam.

Thank you all. Thanks for the meteor shower info-we will be in Sedona during that time.
I was able to back-up our Bryce %26amp; Zion stays by one day and have given ourselves an extra day in Page so we can visit Monument Valley and do more in that area rather than Vegas area.
Our plans now are
Las Vegas 2 nights at Embassy Suites Convention Ctr
Zion-2 nights at Desert Pearl
Bryce-2 nights at Bryce Country Cabins
Page-2 nights at Days Inn
Sedona-4 nights at rented home
GC-2 nights at Bright Angel
Las Vegas-1 night at Embassy Suites before flying home.
We have a float trip booked in Page and Pink Jeep in Sedona. Also will book Chief Tsosie at Antelope Canyon and probably a horseback ride in Zion or Bryce. Will definitely visit Hoover Dam too.
Thanks again!! I am sure I will be bugging for restaurants closer to departure!
Keri
