one month in AZ

I will land in PHX next week and stay for 1 month and be traveling around the whole state of AZ by rented car.

This time I want to, among other things, see (1) a good rodeo, (2) a football match (never seen one in the US), (3) a baseball match (never seen one in the US), (4) car racing. I have difficulty in finding any site or online newspaper with ads for such events. Suggestions?

Also, what ';unusual'; sites are there to be seen? I%26#39;ve been to GC three times, stayed months in PHX area, ..., seen Vulture mine, Old Tucson, ...

one month in AZ

Mogollon Rim, Salt river canyon, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, Montezuma%26#39;s Well, Montezuma%26#39;s Castle, Canyon de Chelle, Petrified Forest, Painted Desert, Shiprock, Monument Valley, Wupatki National Monument, Navaho National Monument, Lake Powell, Hover Dam. Need more?

one month in AZ

sedona and the red rocks.too late for football you just missed the superbowl...and too early for baseball.Maybe some spring training. You might be able to catch some college games at the university in tempe.

Check mlb.com, the official Major League Baseball website, for spring training in Arizona.

Check nascar.com to see if there are any car races in Phoenix while you are here.

Other attractions:

Kartchner Caverns State Park (about an hour from Tucson)

Colossal Cave (just north of Tucson I think)

Bisbee and Tombstone in southern Arizona

Lots to see and do around Tucson. Check my online list:

http://www.mikepintucson.blogspot.com/

Tnx for suggestions!

RM-MN: Some sites are on high altitudes and in desolate areas.

1 - What%26#39;s the probability of bad weather (= snow storms) mid-Feb - mid-Mar ?

2 - Suggestions for an itinerary for, say, 4 days in the Flagstaff - Page - 4-state-corner - Gallup rectangle (~ Navajo nation) ?

3 - Where to stay in or close to Navajo nation ?

MikePinTuscon: Your online list is great!

Maybe try this:

Day 1-2: Arrive an stay Phx, on to Tucson, visit Casa Grande Ruins NM on your way.

Day 3-5: Visit to Tucson

Day 6: Visit Kartchner Cavern and visit Tombstone.

Day 7: Tombsone and to Bisbee. Visit to Bisbee. Make a loop from Tombstone via Sierra Vista and az92

Day 8: Visit Chiricahua NM and stay Willcox.

Day 9: Drive from Willcox-Saffort, Globe, Show Low to Holbrook.

I%26#39;m not familiar with the stretch between Saffort and Globe. Also I only have been between Globe and Holbrook in may and september/october. I can imagine there will be snow on the stretch between Globe and Show Low. Maybe local experts can help. It%26#39;s a wonderful drive.

Day 10: Visit to Petrified Forest, Painted Desert overlook and drive to Gallup (NM).

Day 11: Stay Gallup and make the loop through Zuni Pueblo, El Morro NM, El Malpais NM and if you have the time vist Acoma Pueplo (Sky City). Return Gallup.

Day 12. Drive Gallup to Window Rock. Headquarter of the Navajo Nation. See Hubbell Trading Post near Ganado and drive Chinle. Drive south rim of Canyon de Chelly to Spider Rock overlook and back. Stay Chinle.

Day 13: Take a guided tour into CdC and drive to Monument Valley. (Maybe via 4Statecorner)

Day 14: Morning in Monument Valley and to Page in the afternoon. Maybe visit Navajo NM.

Day 15: All day Page. See Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe bend overlook and Glen Canyon Dam.

Day 16: Drive from Page south on us89. Make a sidetrip to Lees Ferry, Navajo Bridges and Marble Canyon. Look for condors here. Then drive to Tuba City and to Hopi Reservation. Try to stay at the one hotel in Second Mesa.

Day 17: Second mesa to Winslow. Visit Meteor Crater and to Flagstaff. Visit to Walnut Canyon NM first.

Day 18-19; Stay Flagstaff and around.

Day 20-21: Stay Sedona

Day 23: Drive from Sedona via old route 66 (Seligman-Hackberry-Kingman-Sitgreaves pass-Oatman to Needles or Bullhead City/Laughlin.

Now there%26#39;s one week left. Maybe make a side trip to Las Vegas. Or maybe drive all south to Organ Pipe Cactus NM. Awesome but very remote. Return Phoenix.

I left some great places in Utah like Bryce and Zion out, and of course many more options.

Hope this helps some.

BTW a 4th visit to GC doesnot hurt.

Also you can make a great loop from Phoenix including Apache Trail (20 miles are dirtroad).

Even with this trip you%26#39;re only scratching the Az.surface. There are countless options.

Tet

The chance of bad weather is there but most of the places I listed are on major highways that will be opened quickly. You%26#39;ll have to be aware of when and where you are going for your own safety.
