Renting a RV in Las Vegas

Hi

We would like to visit the Grand Canyon during Spring Break with my husband and our 2 kids (6 and 4). We were thinking of renting a RV in Las Vegas and drive to the South Rim. Is it a good idea? Should we stop halfway (in Oatman for example)? Where are the best/ most convenient RV resorts in the area?

Any suggestions are very welcome! Thanks.

Veronique

Renting a RV in Las Vegas

We%26#39;re heading down to GC in April with our RV, so I%26#39;ve been reading this forum a lot! It appears to be about a 5 hour drive to the GC from LV in a car. Were you thinking of staying in LV for a couple of nights in the RV, then going to the GC, or spending your time at the GC?

There is only one RV park with hookups in GC: that is GC Trailer Village. There is one in Tusayan called GC Camper Village, I think, but it gets *very* poor reviews on the RV review websites. Everything else with hookups is about an hour away from the canyon.

If you stay for more than one or two nights, you will need hookups, especially with children. You will have a generator, but will have to start it ever time you run the micro, or watch TV or a movie for example. If you decide to camp without hookups, be very careful you do not fill your black and grey water tanks, or you will need to move the rig and dump it :-(

Hi Half-Brit

Thanks for your recommendations. We don%26#39;t kmow yet how long we will stay in LV and in GC... but certainly more in GC than LV!

Veronique

Here is a website that will help you find RV parks and campgrounds:

www.rv-clubs.us/rv_campgrounds.html

And this site is similiar to TA, with reviews, but for RV parks and campgrounds:

www.rvparkreviews.com

Not all RV parks will be reviewed, but a lot are.

A stop between LV and GC might be along old Route 66, near Peach Springs. There is an RV park at Grand Canyon Caverns that looks okay:

www.gccaverns.com

When you rent your MH, it will take some time to go over all the ins %26amp; outs of the unit, possibly as much as two hours, so plan accordingly.

Oh, forgot to say, there are several RV parks in LV. They vary widely and are pretty expensive, $45 to $70 per night.

The campground at the Caverns looked good, but we didnot stay.(no need with a car-lol-) Also a fuelpump here.

Keep in mind, driving via Oatman will mean at least a 2 hours detour with a RV. And you%26#39;ll have to drive over Sitgreaves Pass (el. 3500 ft) with app.10 miles of switchbacks. It can be done with a RV but just be careful. Great drive though.

Tet

Hi Tet, your statement about Sitgreaves Pass spurred me to check it out. We%26#39;ll be coming off I-40 at Kingman, so won%26#39;t do that part of Rte 66.

However, after looking carefully at numerous pictures and reading accompanying text, I would *not* recommend this route for novice motorhome drivers!

It%26#39;s not just the curves (and they do look like true hairpins), it%26#39;s the rough pavement, rocks and sand which will inevitably be on the roadway.

Thanks.

That%26#39;s why I mentioned it. The roads on Sitgreaves pass are not in a very good condition but I%26#39;ve seen RV%26#39;s driving it. I agree though, maybe not for a novice.
