Staying in Flagstaff away from the railway

I believe that the railway runs through Flagstaff. We are searching for a hotel which will not have any noise from the trains, on every trip to the USA we always get a hotel near railway lines and are kept awake all night by the horns being sounded - why do they do this at night time? Is Little America OK? I know it is close to I40 but reports say the grounds etc make it calm, quiet and pleasnt. Any tips please?

I don%26#39;t recall hearing the train from Little America. If you ask for a room towards the back (opposite side of I-40), it should be very quiet.

Although this type of hotel is not my ';style';, I was very happy with my stay there. Friendly, clean, and we got a good deal.

They recently changed the crossings so that the trains don%26#39;t actually blow their whistles, but there%26#39;s something just as annoying at the crossing. I read about in the paper, but couldn%26#39;t find the article. It%26#39;s one of the busiest rail corridors in the West, if not the country. They%26#39;ve been working on a ';quiet zone'; there similar to what they%26#39;re trying to do here in Downtown Tucson or what they%26#39;ve done in Downtown San Diego, but it probably won%26#39;t be for many years.

There are a group of hotels near I-40/Butler Avenue, including Little America, that you won%26#39;t hear the train at. Little America is probably the nicest of them though.

Conversely, there%26#39;s the I-40/South Milton area that includes the Hilton Garden, Ramada, Embassy Suites, Sleep Inn, Fairfield Inn and a Hampton. It%26#39;s a good area for shopping and convenient for everything else, while the Butler area is more isolated.

Sorry Collin but that was just a test drive. I hear those damned whisltes every day they haven%26#39;t implemented it yet. So if your outside or in a nearby building you will hear it.

Little america is ok. I%26#39;m not a huge fan, their rooms are a little over dressed with wanna be French accents. The food at the place is good though. Also the front part of Little America is a major truck stop as well. It is right off of I-40 though.

Its up to you some like it, its not everyones taste though. FOr the price they charge I';d assume to stay at Embassy Suites which is close to downtown and you don%26#39;t hear the train noise. Also the Raddison is quiet to but its on the West side of town but no noise.

Also have the hospitality school inn, on the campus at NAU. http://home.nau.edu/hrm/

and some folks have had some luck with these cabins.

Some of these are in old down town, so may be close to the tracks. But fun !

I stayed at Little America, and it was a fantastic experience. But it is almost like a resort, where you really don%26#39;t need to leave. There are plenty of hiking trails, swimming pools, and restaurants. I didn%26#39;t hear trains from there.

Most of my overnight visits to Flag include a stay at the Hampton Inn, the one just off of the I-40, where I-17 begins/ends. I have heard some traffic from there (fire trucks), but nothing drastic.

Hi, I am staying at the Embassy Suites in Flagstaff and have read a lot about the noise of the railway and the whisles.

I was advised to ask for a courtyard roo. Anyone stay there recently and can advise ??????

Embassy is far enough from the crossings not to hear it unless you have your window open. I don%26#39;t know about the different rooms but I do know its a good place always consitant place to stay.

Thank you everyone for you reports, I know it sounds picky but those darned trains are a pain, in the UK where we live they do not sound whistles at night. Seems as if Little America came out as an OK place to stay, we will request a room overlooking the forest Any tips / places we should see / visit while we are ther always greatfully received.
