questions about whether we need to rent a car

Within a 5 mile radius you%26#39;ll find plenty of shopping and dining options. but if you want to see and do things of interest, then get a car. You%26#39;ll be paying for transportation to get there from the airport anyway. Why not apply it to a car rental?

Need? Doubtful. Want? Probably.

How long will you be there? What are you planning to do in the area, other than stay at the hotel? Even if the hotel has a shuttle, I%26#39;d bet the hotel will be fairly full and you won%26#39;t be the only guests wanting to use it.

If in town 3+ days, I%26#39;d highly recommend a daytrip to Sedona, which would require a car.

thanks. we are arriving on feb 18th and staying until the 24th. i have tentatively rented a car for the friday, sat and returning it sun to phx. my friend is going to the mayo clinic so i thought for the first couple of days we would stick around and use the shuttle services. we will try to go to sedona when we get the car.... when i checked prices renting a car at the phx was really pricey and i hope that just having it the few days will be ok.....

I don%26#39;t know how adventurous you are - but the 72 Valley Metro bus runs north/south on Scottsdale Rd. and is very reliable. Once you are in Old Town there is a local trolley that can get you around that area if you tire of walking. Something to remember if the shuttle is delayed.

A visit to both Old Town and Kierland Commons would be a pleasant way to spend some time. Interesting shops (and vastly different from each other!) and good dining.

Mayo is great - hope your friend is OK.

do not rent at the airport, work your schedule around the off site locations in Scottsdale. I think Avis and Hertz have locations, and much cheaper than the airport, only thing is they are open during business hours and limited hours on weekends, they also will pick you up a short distance from the location. Enterprise too.

i tentatively rented from budget which supposedly will pick us up on friday morning so we can go to sedona.... sat. we will shop and sunday will drop the car off at phx.... so will save the supershuttle fare at least one way. thanks for all the help.

I would have thought all rates for any particular car rental company out of Phoenix/Scottsdale would be the same regardless, but if not, maybe picking up elsewhere is a better option . . .

Are the rates really cheaper if you pick up elsewhere than the airport?

The rental rates are the same, but the tax is higher if you use the airport rental center.
