we are coming to Arizona / Utah in July of 2009 (nothing like planning early!) and we (2 adults plus 15 year old son) really want to go white water rafting.
Is this possible in either Arizona/Utah during July?
Thank you for your help!
White Water Rafting
If you will google ';rafting the colorado river'; you will find many websites of whitewater rafting companies. Trips of varying lengths leave from Moab, Utah to go into Canyonlands National Park. Trips into and through Grand Canyon National Park meet at different places in Arizona, but all launch at Lees Ferry.
Do Grand Canyon if possible!
White Water RaftingFor your planning, Colorado River rafting in the Grand Canyon ranges from 3, 4 and 7 days and longer trips. There is one day whitewater rafting on the Salt River but usually in the beginning of the summer.
Also maybe try white water rafting near Bluff,Ut on San Juan River.
Many thanks for all your ideas/help!
Do the San Juan. Very steep, so not a lot of paddling, but not many big rapids either. Great country, and everything from daytrip to 4-5 days.
The silt load is so high, sometimes we don%26#39;t need sunscreen !
If you have the time and money, do the canyon once in your life. You can do the 3 day, but you hike out-and up ! Day trip is flatwater.
Once again, manythanks for your help. I%26#39;ll do some searching.
What we really want do do is an overnight trip, how does that work if you have a car - do you then get driven back to where you started from/where your car is?
Hatch River Expd. runs trips on the San Juan, and can do shuttles for you. there are also two campgrounds there, and at least 2 other folks just doing shuttles.
Don%26#39;t have there names, but if you query the camps, they can forward to you. Only 8 businesses in town !
Overnight trip gets you from put in at Sand Island to San Juan itself. stop near Butler Wash for the Indian Ruins, and we like to camp down by the Mexican Hat on the out. Only about an hour left after that.
Clay Hills is 3 days minimum, and long shuttle too.
contact the BLM office in Monticello for permits.
