Should the current status of road construction on 179 affect where we decide to stay? We are considering staying in the Village of Oak Creek, but will probably do activities all over the area. Our other option is in West Sedona. We thought we might stay in Village of Oak Creek this time, but will reconsider that if traffic is really an issue.
Question about road constructionTraffic is only an issue relative to the timing of your visit and the number of travelers in Sedona at that time. The road construction delays are almost nonexistant. The current construction is taking place on the 3 mile stretch of road from the Y (intersection of 89A %26amp; 179) south to Back O%26#39; Beyond.
Staying in VOC vs West Sedona is simply a matter of choosing a motel or B%26amp;B. Road construction and traffic delays are practically a non issue.
Question about road constructionRedrox--Thanks for the update regarding traffic--that helps us with our decision.
The Village is a great option, as it is south of the construction. You will need to go through it to get to Uptown Sedona, but as RedRox mentioned things have settled down.
I would opt for West Sedona. The traffic this week on 179 has been horrendous during the week. I know, I live there. It has been taking a minimum of 30 minuts to get into Sedona and Friday, the time was more like 40 minutes. It may calm down this next week, but there is a lot of construction.
We have just returned from our Spring Break including two days in Sedona, staying at the Hilton Sedona, Village of Oak Creek. First off, the property was lovely. The location is close to The Chapel of the Holy Cross, Bell Rock Pathway, sunset views of Cathedral Rock, Montezuma%26#39;s Castle and plenty of restaurants, gas stations etc. We spent one day on that end of town. The next day, we spent the day in Sedona proper, Boynton Canyon area and taking a Pink Jeep tour. We did not return to our hotel to avoid the traffic/construction (20-30 min delay), but that did not effect us as we had a car and visited local restaurants. If you plan properly, you should not have any problem in VOC and it is actually more convenient to some sights.
Happy travels,
kim
Kim makes a good point. There are things to see and do all around Sedona and it%26#39;s easy to spend a full day without having to deal with the potential traffic and congestion near the bridge on SR 179.
Furthermore, the traffic that jpad referenced this week is due more to the large number of tourists in town right now, than to the construction project. While both are factors, the construction alone is causing minimal delays. The heavy tourist trade and gawkers at the wheel can be more troublesome.
So regardless of where you stay, VOC, West Sedona or Uptown, try to plan your daily activities by going in one direction or another. And do it so that you don%26#39;t need to go back to your digs during the day. That is a typical way to visit Sedona anyway. Hanging out at your hotel or going back and forth during the day is a waste of precious time when you%26#39;re visiting Sedona.
Thanks to everyone who replied. I really appreciate all of your advice. This forum is so helpful!
