My daughter will be returning from Spring Break to a social studies project due on Native Americans. Can someone give me a quick list of Native American experiences we should do while in Phoenix. We%26#39;ve already got the Heard Museum on our list. Thanks!

Heard Museum would be number 1. Further north in Flagstaff is the Museum of Northern AZ, also a good source. Visiting the reservations is not advised as the natives tend to prefer their pivacy and guard it well. What you might see there is mostly poverty anyway. Check the tribal websites to see if there are any special events scheduled while you%26#39;re here. And also consider visiting some of the ancient ruins sites to learn about the ancient cultures. There are many sites all over AZ to the north and south of PHX.

Montezuma Castle National Monument is just north on Interstate 17 - she will get some impressive photos from the visitor trail.

South of Phoenix is Casa Grande Nat Monument, an ancient Hohokam ruin. www.nps.gov/cagr . Near Cottonwood is Tuzigoot Nat Mon, www.nps.gov/tuzi
If you have a day and night to travel outside of Phoenix, visit the Hopi Mesas, NE of Flagstaff. These villages look the same as they did long ago. A wonderful place to visit. www.hopiculturalcenter.com

I feel strongly that Montezuma Castle (built so far up on a cliff no one can figure out how they lived there) Montezuma Well (an impressive irrigation system long before modern technology) and Tuzigoot (one that you can actually walk around the foundation) are all truly wondrous experiences. When I lived in Sedona area I used to take my journal and just sit at the bottom of Montezuma Castle and write and meditate. Its%26#39; just an impressive sight. The Castle and Tuzigoot both have small native american museums and information areas for her project.
I have found various local websites that just tell of the national native american monuments in AZ.
All of the suggestions are great if you have the time to run all over the state. Not sure what your time frame is.
If you are staying in the Phoenix area I suggest you visit Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park which is not far from the airport. http://www.phoenix.gov/parks/pueblo.html It will give your daughter a wonderful overview of the Hohokam people who lived in the area over 1000 years ago and are responsible for the amazing canal system we still use today.
If the timing is right you can attend Native Trails in Scottsdale. Check to see if they will have a performance while you are here. scottsdaleperformingarts.org/special_events_…
Depending on how hot it is you can visit the rock art site which is just off of Deer valley road on the N end of phoenix. If its going to be hot go in the am
