Driving from Las Vegas with children 6 & 8 yrs mid March

My family is considering a trip to Las Vegas during the Spring Break, and I%26#39;m wondering it it%26#39;s advisable to visit the Grand Canyon in mid March. I always thought that it%26#39;s like a desert there and is hot all the time, but apparently that%26#39;s not the case!!! Are there certain parts of the Park that is warmer, ie is the Southern part warmer? I don%26#39;t know much about the park at all...

How is the drive out to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas? Do you suggest an overnight stay, or would a day trip be sufficient? We prefer not to have to change hotels...

Hi

It%26#39;s a 5 hours drive from Las Vegas to GC village and you%26#39;ll have to go to south rim because north rim will beclosed till mid may. You can%26#39;t predict weather but nights will be cold while daytemps can be nice. GCNP south rim is at 7000 ft. It%26#39;s an easy drive from Las Vegas but you might encounter snow on your way esp. near Williams. Never go on a daytrip to GCNP if you don%26#39;t have to. Always try to stay at least one night, preferable at the rim. Maybe check www.grandcanyonlodges.com. If booked try Tusayan at the south entrance of GCNP, only a 15 minutes drive to GC Village.

Have a great trip to one of the most beautiful places in the world.

I%26#39;d definitely recommend you stay at least one night at the GC (South Rim), if not more if you can spare that. It would make for a very long day-trip from Las Vegas if you tried to do that.

The drive is very easy to the GC from Las Vegas. I%26#39;ve only done it in February and can assure you it%26#39;s not hot all year round. At night, it gets very, very cold in winter.

With children, I would recommend you stop at thge town of Oatman on the way to (or back from ) the GC.

Oatman makes a nice stop as W2T said but keep in mind it can add 1.5 to 2 hours to your trip with a visit to Oatman between Las Vegas and GCNP and you%26#39;ll have to drive Sitgreaves pass between Oatman and Kingman and the road to Oatman from Bullhead City is not that easy to find (no direct connection between Bullhead City and Oatman). If you can find time to visit Oatman I also would recommend to take the detour.

Thank you so much for all your responses!

Thanks to your suggestions, we%26#39;ve booked 2 nights at the Holiday Inn Express, GC, going straight from the airport upon arrival in LV.

How is the drive from the McCarran Airport in LV--is it 5 hours to GC? Our plane arrives 4:30pm and we estimate that by the time we arrive at GC it%26#39;ll be close to midnight (we%26#39;ll have to catch a bite along the way--any suggestions?) Do the roads get icy at night? Are they well lit?

What are some must do%26#39;s and must see%26#39;s at GC?

Thanks for suggesting Oatman! We would love to drop by there on our way back to LV.

Thanks again for your helpful comments.

Holiday Inn is in Tusayan at the south entrance of GCNP. It%26#39;s only a 15 minutes drive to GC Village but its not inside GCNP.

It%26#39;s a smooth 5 hours drive from McCarren to GCNP but it will be dark because roads aren%26#39;t lit at all,

Arriving 4.30 pm does not mean you are on the road then (pu rental car, luggage etc). Maybe consider to stay in Kingman if it gets too late. Ample lodging and food.

One can%26#39;t predict if roads are icy but there%26#39;s always a chance. Williams is at 6000 ft, GCNP on 7000.
